Any members who would like to deconstruct a Novel, (Script/Screenplay, Movie/Play, TV Show/Mini-Series), should do so on this board. Thanks.
How To Start:
- Read the novel, script, etc. all the way through once, before deconstructing.
- Reread slowly, taking notes as you go along. (Further instructions are in the links posted above.)
- Watch the movie, tv show, etc. all the way through once, before deconstructing.
- Rewatch slowly, taking notes as you go along.
DVD Buttons:
- Display: Press once to get CH _/_ _; press twice to get TT _ _/_ _ _:_ _:_ _ -_:_ _:_ _.
- Search Mode: Press once to get CH _ _/_ _; press twice to get TT _ _/_ _; press three times to get _:_ _:_ _ Total _:_ _:_ _

Divide & Conquer:
Novel:
Number of Pages divided by 4; Number of Pages divided by 2.
3-Act MS
- 1st Doorway/TP might be found at/around the 1/4 mark, or thereabouts.
- Midpoint might be found at/around the 1/2 mark. (The midpoint divides Act Two into two parts. Act 2 - Pt 1 occurs before the midpoint, and Act 2 - Pt 2 occurs after the midpoint.)
- 2nd Doorway/TP might be found at/around the 3/4 mark or later.
4-Act MS
- 1st TP might be found at/around the 1/4 mark.
- 2nd TP might be found at/around the 1/2 mark.
- 3rd TP might be found at/around the 3/4 mark.
3-Act vs. 4-Act Structure:
3-Act | 4-Act | Act One | Act One | Act Two - Part One | Act Two | Act Two - Part Two | Act Three | Act Three | Act Four |
3-Act | 4-Act | 1st Doorway/Turning Point | 1st Turning Point | Midpoint | 2nd TP | 2nd Doorway/TP | 3rd TP |
Use whichever structure works best for you.

Divide & Conquer:
The Lovely Bones:
Total Pages: 328
1/4 Mark: Page 82
1/2 Mark: Page 164
3/4 Mark: Page 246
So the first doorway/turning point might be found at/around page 82.
The Midpoint/2nd TP might be found at/around page 164.
The second doorway/3rd TP might be found at/around page 246.
* See first post to continue deconstruction. (I've not yet tried my hand at this, so I don't have an example to post at this time.)

Divide & Conquer:
Movie:
Divide the movie time/scenes by 4.
Here's How To Divide Movie Time: Turn hours into minutes. Add to minutes, (if any). Turn minutes into seconds. Add to seconds, (if any). Divide by 4. Divide by 60.
Example:
Movie - The Cave (2005) (Sci-Fi/Fantasy):
Total Time: 1:37:18
1 hour equals 60 mins. 60 mins plus 37 mins. equals 97 mins. 97 mins. times 60 equals 5820 seconds. 5820 seconds plus 18 seconds equals 5838 seconds. 5838 seconds divided by 4 equals 1459.5 seconds. 1459.5 seconds divided by 60 equals 24.325 mins.
So the first doorway/turning point might be found at/around 24/25 minutes into the movie. (It should be within the first 30 minutes at the most. If you go beyond that point you'll start to lose viewers.)
The midpoint/2nd TP might be found at/around 48/50 minutes into the movie.
The second doorway/3rd TP might be found at/around 72/75 minutes into the movie, or later. (1 hour, 12-15 minutes; 1:12:00 to 1:15:00)
Total Scenes: 28
28 divided by 4 equals 7.
So the first doorway/turning point might be found at/around scene 7 or sooner. (Again, the first doorway/TP should occur within the first 30 minutes or you'll start to lose viewers.)
The midpoint/2nd TP might be found at/around scene 14.
The second doorway/3rd TP might be found at/around scene 21, or later.
I've not deconstructed a movie yet, so I don't have an example at this time. Also, dividing the scenes may not line up with the division of time, due to some scenes being longer/shorter than others in any given section of the 4 divisions. In which case, I'd choose to use time divisions and ignore scene divisions.

Okay, it appears I may have been looking at the movie deconstruction all wrong:
